چکیده

Plasma and cerebrospinal fluid 0-endorphin concentrations were radioimmunologically assayed in dogs subjected to spinal cord ischemia induced by infrarenal aortic ligature and in control sham-operated dogs. Plasma /3-endorphin levels rose significantly following surgery in control dogs but were unaffected by spinal ischemia. On the other hand, a significant increase in cerebrospinal fluid /3-endorphin concentration occurred after spinal ischemia, while surgical stress had no significant effect. Thus, the origins of plasma and cerebrospinal fluid /3-endorphin may be different, with the former secreted from the hypophysis and the latter from nervous tissue. Observed changes in cerebrospinal fluid /3-endorphin concentration could be related to the ischemic lesion of nervous tissue while the changes in plasma levels may reflect general stressing factors such as the surgery in our experiments. Effects of tourniquet-induced ischemia on the release of proopiomelanocortin derivatives determined in peripheral blood plasma.

Proopiomelanocortin (POMC) is expressed in pituitary, central nervous system, and in a few peripheral tissues. This study addresses the hypothesis that metabolic stressors, such as acidosis, may induce the release of POMC derivatives into the cardiovascular system not only from the pituitary but also from other sites of POMC expression. In our study, we investigated the liberation of POMC deriv...

Protective effect of lutein on spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats

Objective(s): Paraplegia is deterioration in motor or sensory function of the lower limbs that can occur after modification of a thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm. The purpose of this survey was to determine the protective action of lutein on spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion (I-R) damage. Materials and Methods: Thirty-five male rats were distributed into five groups: intact, sham, dimethyl sulfo...

Protective effect of Crocus sativus L. (Saffron) extract on spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats

Objective(s): Ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury of spinal cord is leading to the paraplegia observed. In this study, we investigated the protective effect of the saffron extract on spinal cord I/R injury. Materials and Methods: Thirty five male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 5 groups: intact, sham surgery, normal saline (NS), low dose saffron aqua extract, high dose saffron aqua extract....

Protective Effect of Catechin Hydrate on Spinal Cord Ischemia-reperfusion Injury in Rats

Background: Aortic artery stenosis leads to Ischemia-Reperfusion (I-R) injury, which can cause certain clinical expressions, such as paraplegia. Objectives: To appraise the effect of Catechin Hydrate (CH) against spinal cord I-R injury. Materials & Methods: A total of 35 male rats (250-300 g) were divided randomly into five groups:  intact, sham surgery, dimethyl sulfoxide (I-R+DMSO), low-dos...

Study of Neuroprotective Effects of Green Tea Antioxidant on Spinal Cord Injury of Rat

Purpose: Recent studies revealed the neuroprotective effects of green tea antioxidant on experimental cerebral ischemia, but these effects on spinal cord injury (SCI) has not yet been studied.Materials and Methods: Rats were randomly divided into three groups of 18 rats each as follows: sham group (laminectomy), control group (SCI) and experimental group (EGCG). Spinal cord samples were taken 2...
